Trip to Mount Moe

Approx 20km distance and 2200m gain
Round trip 12.5 hours

In the early hours of Sunday, Caroline, Elias and I set off to Mount Moe. The approach trail to Wedgemount lake is snow free except for small patches just before the campsite. From there, we headed up the south slopes of Mount Cook, soon leaving the trail to shortcut up the scree to the ridge. The few snow patches on the way up could easily be avoided.

Once reaching Mount Cook, we followed the ridge along the armchair traverse for a few hundred meters until reaching a low point where we could easily cross onto the glacier.

The glacier appeared well filled in, nonetheless we roped up for the crossing. We headed north, sticking to low angle slope, crossed over a small snow ridge, then continued on the glacier until Moe’s east ridge.

The transition back onto rock on Moe’s east ridge went without problem, and from there it was a short scree walk to the summit.

Beautiful views at the top and 3 happy hikers.

This is actually tempting me to go back up there again, after swearing off that trail on the miserable descent down from James Turner. I’ve always liked wise birds… @fbailey @tbarker @stevesssss

I’ve been up that trail 6x thinking this will be the last time, and then I keep seeing new peaks every time. At least the views never disappoint and there’s no bush bashing

@abarker Let’s do this next year and try to time it for the partially melted lake. I think this and the Owls are the only peaks that would motivate me enough to repeat the approach again.
