Abode and Wag Peaks June 14 2025

I’ve always been intrigued by the scenery on the North side of Duffy Lake. Finally, an opportunity to explore it appeared in the form of invitation to a joint BCMC-ACC trip to unofficially named Abode Peak. Our group had 7 people, and we car camped on a pullout from Van Horlick FSR - a nice, quiet spot, infrequently visited by its appearance. The next day we drove about 2km further along the lake to a spot where the highway drops down close (but not too close  ) to the lake and launched our watercraft - 3 kayaks and a canoe. We chose to stay close to the shore instead of cutting across as, according to our leader, capsizing in the middle of the lake would have been fatal due to its temperature. The paddle to the “trailhead” took about an hour and we were greeted by two loons - a very Canadian experience.
The initial forest ascent was not too bushy, but with a lot of annoying deadfall (this picture was taken on the descent):

Upon reaching the alpine meadows we made a traverse to the right, aiming for the col on the ridge parallel to the lake.

Then we gained a bump on the ridge where another one, leading to Abode Peak, joins it from the North, and followed it to the easy, round summit of Abode. Great views all around.

On the way back our group split. Some people decided to backtrack the ascent path, while others chose to visit Wag Peak located on the main ridge. The idea was to avoid side-hilling and tag another peak, and it paid off well. There were impressive decaying cornices, and the views from Wag were great:

Thanks to a remaining long snow tongue, our descent was fast and easy, until reaching the lower meadows at the beginning of their bloom and re-grouping.

The return trip across the lake was uneventful - a good thing in watersports.
Trip stats:
Elevation gain: ~1450m by altimeter
Hiking distance: ~11km by GPS
Hiking time: ~10 hours with multiple stops
Wildlife: evidence of large cats’ presence, loons, ospreys.
Bugs: moderate.
GPS track: available upon request.

An excellent trip in a great company.

Nice! This area is so damn pretty. The twin lakes area is close by and similarly lovely.

Wow nice one! Such a cool approach. Looks like the summer flowers are coming in

Yes. The peaks near the Twin Lakes, now known as Elliott and Crystal, are nice too. I visited them when they did not have their names yet
